Embassy supports innovative project to assist the visually disabled in Brest

On June 5, Public Affairs Officer Betsy Lewis delivered remarks at Brest’s new bus station, where she joined others in inaugurating a new voice navigation system for the visually disabled.  Over 100 people attended the event, including a group of visually disabled that came from all over Belarus to test the new navigation tool.  The tool, based on a “click and go” principle, helps people with various types of disabilities navigate in any facility by means of a free smart phone application.  The project, supported by the Embassy’s Small Grants Program, is being carried out in various Belarusian cities by “Center of a Successful Person,” a non-governmental organization (NGO) that specializes in assisting the disabled. Promotion of disability rights is one of Embassy Minsk’s top priorities. This project underlines the important progress that is being made in Belarus in this area and showcases cooperation between local, regional, and international partners, as well as the public and private sectors.
