Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Eric Rubin met today with President Lukashenka. They discussed, among other things, bilateral U.S.-Belarusian relations, human rights and democratization issues, the state of the Belarusian economy, and issues of regional security, including the situation in Ukraine. Mr. Rubin noted the positive role Belarus has played in efforts to find a peaceful solution in Ukraine and underscored the commitment of the United States to supporting the sovereignty and independence of all states. Mr. Rubin, as he did in an earlier meeting with Foreign Minister Makei, discussed possibilities for improved cooperation with Belarus in areas of mutual concern, while emphasizing long-standing U.S. concerns on the need for concrete steps on human rights and democracy, including in the run-up to 2015 presidential elections.
