Event: Media reports have highlighted public political gatherings, events for presidential candidates, and arrests and detentions of presidential candidates and their supporters. Law enforcement authorities have detained and arrested some participants and organizers of these events for alleged violations of Belarusian law.

The City of Minsk’s Executive Committee established six locations designated for mass events. Although the Embassy is not aware of demonstrations or protests related to these planned election events, we remind American citizens that unauthorized gatherings could still develop at various locations throughout Belarus. We recommend U.S. citizens avoid public demonstrations or protests, remain aware of their surroundings, and keep in mind that demonstrations intended to be peaceful can become confrontational and escalate into violence.

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid mass gatherings.
  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Carry proper Identification, including a U.S. passport with a current Belarusian visa or valid visa-free entry stamp.
