The United States is shocked and disturbed by the horrible circumstances surrounding the November 12 death of Raman Bandarenka who, according to eyewitness accounts, died from traumatic injuries sustained after brutal beatings by plainclothes police. We extend our condolences to his family and stand in solidarity with all the people of Belarus mourning his loss.
We call on the authorities to conduct a transparent investigation and bring to justice those responsible for Mr. Bandarenka’s death. We condemn the ongoing violence against, and suppression of, peaceful protesters. This is unacceptable in a modern society and must cease immediately. We once again call on Belarusian authorities to afford the Belarusian people their rights to freely and peacefully express themselves, assemble, and petition their government. The Belarusian people deserve a government that respects their human rights and offers hope for a better future.
